Usher in Chinese New Year 2018

Chinese New Year — also known as Spring Festival or Lunar New Year — officially begins on Feb. 16 this year, welcoming the Year of the Dog as well as marking the beginning of spring according to the Chinese calendar. Although that’s still over a week away, celebrations are already getting underway all across the Lower Mainland. We’ve put together a list of places to check out this CNY.


FlyOver Canada: Flight of the Dragon (now until Feb. 18)

This six-minute flight ride takes visitors up and over some of China’s most stunning scenery like the Great Wall, the city of Shanghai and various mountain ranges. The event is preceded by a themed pre-show and followed by the standard Canadian FlyOver experience.

Oakridge Centre: Lunarfest (Now to Feb. 25)

Customize a lantern with personal thoughts and prayers and have it hung, along with hundreds of others, as part of a Lantern of Blessings installation at Oakridge Centre. After the end of the exhibition, guests can return and pick up their creation to take home.

Aberdeen Centre: Chinese New Year Flower & Gift Fair (Feb. 9 to 18)

No CNY is complete without proper decorations for the home. Drop by Aberdeen for the annual fair and peruse vendors selling fresh flowers and plants, packaged goods, souvenirs as well as traditional sweets, snacks and foods.

International Village Mall: Chinese New Year Art Festival (Feb. 10 to 23)

Hosted at the International Arts Gallery on the second floor of the mall, come see unique works dedicated to the Year of the Dog in different mediums such as canvas, photography and digital media. In addition, between Feb. 16 and 18 International Village will be featuring multi-cultural live performances, lucky draw for prizes and more.

River Rock Casino Resort: Lunar New Year Celebration (Feb. 16)

Bring the whole family to River Rock Casino Resort and ring in the start of CNY right with a special blessing ceremony. Afterwards, festivities will be taking place in the casino lobby including a colourful lion dance. Admission is free and all ages are welcome.
