How to dress up the home for Easter

Are you in that Easter long weekend state of mind yet? Here are a handful of ideas on how to get your home looking and feeling the part.

Flower Power

How about skipping the tulips this year and trying something different? Right now we’re in love with hydrangeas. Instead of using a conventional vase, dust off that vintage milk bottle you picked up at the second hand shop (or Crate and Barrel) instead to act as base for your spring flowers. Tie on a little twine to give a rustic touch.

Bring on the bunnies

It’s just not quite Easter if there’s not a bunny or two floating around. Use a small ceramic rabbit as an accessory on the dinner table, and/or drape a tablecloth featuring the two legged critter. Find a few sheets of paper and fold origami bunnies to represent place markers. Here’s a sample DIY.

Egg-cellent

Similarly, one can’t neglect this time-tested tradition. Decorate eggs in your favourite pastel hues and set around the house — just don’t hide them. Put a few on the shelf, on the coffee table, you get the idea. For time-conscious individuals, dollar stores usually carry ready-made examples.

Where the magic happens

Still have dark winter-themed sheets on the bed? Easter is the unofficial start of spring so think white or bright. Make the nightstand pop by adding a new colour-appropriate lamp or accessory.

Nesting

A DIY nest makes a bold centerpiece. The kitchen cupboard and a trip to the local craft supplies retailer should yield all the materials needed such as angel hair vine filler, thin wire, scissors and a bowl the size you’d like the finished product to be. Flip the bowl upside down to create a makeshift mold, and wrap the filler around. Trim away any excess. Then cut some wire and tie the filler together to make your nest. Fill with chocolate eggs.
