Planning a visit to Crescent Beach this summer? Make sure to grab a life jacket for use while you’re there, offered in both adult and children’s sizes.

The free rental program was launched last week, part of two new water safety initiatives by the City of Surrey and the Surrey Fire Fighters Charitable Society. The other is a complimentary life jacket fitting assessment program at all local indoor and outdoor pools.

“Every summer people head to the beach or the pool to beat the heat and these new City of Surrey programs will help ensure that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the water safely,” said Mayor Doug McCallum.

“The two new initiatives we have launched today will increase awareness of water safety and reduce water-related fatalities. I want to thank the Surrey Fire Fighters Charitable Society for their financial support in the free life jacket rental program.”

Ensuring a proper fit and sizing is important, as life jackets are the best tool to prevent drowning.

The third leading cause of accidental death in Canada, water-related fatalities typically spike during the warmer months between May and September when people are more frequently engaging in aquatic activities.

Rentals are available until Labour Day, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the lifeguard station if a lifeguard is on duty. Crescent Beach can be accessed at Beecher Sullivan and Target Streets, and dates back to 1909 when development of the Great North Railway first made the area widely known to the public. Other amenities onsite include spots designated for volleyball and a large grassy field perfect for a picnic.
