Plans for future of Metropolis at Metrotown move forward

Not only is Metropolis at Metrotown among the top biggest and most visited enclosed malls in Canada, it’s also one of the most well-known landmarks in Greater Vancouver. And plans are moving forward for some big changes to the property.

Last week, Burnaby City Council asked staff to liaise with the owners of the massive complex — Ivanhoe Cambridge — to work on a master plan representing a potential redevelopment of massive proportions. The area would encompass 17.7 hectares that now houses Metropolis shopping centre, three office towers (Metro Towers I, II and III) and the former Sears department store, which belongs to Concord Pacific.

Translated into square footage the current footprint is taken up by 1.7 million of retail space, 1.2 million of office space as well as more than 8,000 parking spaces.

“This is an exciting opportunity to deliver on the vision residents helped develop in the 2017 Metrotown Downtown Plan,” said Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley. “That plan outlines a vision of Metrotown as a real destination that attracts people for many reasons – not only to shop, but also to work, play, and spend a night on the town. The future Metrotown will reflect the diversity that makes this such a great city.”

The project is set to provide a framework for future site-specific rezoning applications for the creation of an integrated and mixed-use community. In addition to housing, people can expect stores, restaurants, parks and plazas.

Derek Coss, senior vice president and chief development officer retail with Ivanhoe Cambridge, said the process won’t happen overnight.

“The Metropolis at Metrotown Master Plan is a long-term vision for the area that will take decades to realize,” said Coss.

For those interested in learning more, a public information session is taking place on Nov. 25 in the mall’s Atrium Court from 4 to 7 p.m.
