Get acquainted — or reacquainted — with Lulu Island by hopping on board a new free tourist shuttle.
A partnership between the municipal government, Tourism Richmond and Richmond Hotel Association, the service is operated by Landsea Tours and is running every weekend now until Sept. 2.
“Tourism is an important and growing economic sector for our city,” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “More and more visitors are discovering our local tourist attractions, which helps create jobs and increased local spending, while also adding to community vibrancy. This shuttle will help even more people explore all that Richmond has to offer.”
There are five stops at the following points of interest:
-
1. Lansdowne Station
Shopping at the mall, visiting restaurant-packed Alexandra Road or catching a lift on the Canada Line for a 20-minute ride downtown are just a few of the many options available at this uber-central location.
2. Sheraton Vancouver Airport
Guests of the nearby Marriott, Hilton and other hotels will also find this stop convenient. In addition, Minoru Park, the local art gallery and museum and Richmond Centre are just a few steps away.
3. Richmond Olympic Oval
Get your fitness on, or visit Canada’s only Museum, inside the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games legacy building. Then have a waterfront picnic along the adjacent dyke.
4. Gulf of Georgia Cannery
Discover the Gulf of Georgia Cannery in the heart of Steveston Village, which was originally built in 1894 and once the leading producer of canned salmon in B.C.
5. Britannia Shipyards
Another National Historic Site, go back in time with a tour of shipyards and see how fishing industry workers once lived a hundred years ago.
Tourism Richmond CEO Nancy Small says she believes the Richmond Discovery Shuttle bridges many gaps, and is a great example of organizations coming together to grow the visitor economy.
“Our Visitor Volume Study has shown that the more activities a tourist does in our city, the more they loved Richmond. Let’s get them exploring,” said Small.
