City of Vancouver now offers free public Wi-Fi at over 750 locations

Did you know Vancouver has one of the largest free public Wi-Fi networks in North America?

Thanks to a partnership with Shaw, the #VanWiFi service is offered across the city at designated locations including all Vancouver Public Library branches, community centres and other city-run buildings, four outdoor pools, three theatres, two marinas and more.

“This is an exciting development for the visitor experience in Vancouver,” said Ted Lee, CFO and commercial director at Tourism Vancouver.

“Free Wi-Fi service in key locations will enable visitors to use their smartphones and devices to discover attractions, activities, and restaurants, for way finding, and to navigate Vancouver’s transportation options. It will also better enable visitors to use social media on a real-time basis to share their Vancouver experiences with the world.”

The project originated in 2014, when the municipal government began soliciting applications from telecommunications providers to help set up a network, a stipulation being there would be no cost passed onto the city. Shaw was selected, and started with 42 locations in 2014. A year later, another 15 were added at nine social housing sites and six outdoor sites. Now, there are 753.

Jim Little, Shaw Communications executive vice president, echoed Lee’s sentiments, saying, “Like our partners at the City of Vancouver, we understand how important it is to have access to a broadly available Wi-Fi network in the places we frequent the most.”

“This vast expansion of the #VanWiFi public network will give residents and visitors to Vancouver easy connectivity in the busiest locations across the city, whenever they want and need it for free,” added Little.

Those looking to hop onto the Internet don’t need to give any personal information to connect, and can expect bandwidth speeds of approximately 10 Mbps. There is no cap on data usage.
