Ever think how great it would be if you could just hop on a boat from Queensborough and go straight to the New West Quay? Well your wish has come true with the recent announcement of the Q to Q ferry.

First tested in 2017, the pilot program was well received and re-launched again this past May, going until Oct. 28, 2018. Open for business daily, passengers can catch the wheelchair-accessible ferry from 7 a.m. to 8 pm. Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and statutory holidays.

“The 2018 Q to Q pilot ferry project gives us an opportunity to test the viability of providing a regular ferry service between Queensborough and downtown New Westminster,” said Mayor Jonathan Coté. “Providing a reliable and frequent connection seven days a week for commuters, shoppers, and those seeking access to transit services, recreational, and cultural opportunities is a priority for our growing city.”

Going back and forth from a dock below the Inn at the Quay and the Port Royal public dock, the crossing takes approximately five minutes. During the peak hours of 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 11:10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends, two 12-passenger ferries will be picking up and dropping off every 15 minutes. At all other times, one ferry runs at 30 minutes intervals.

Transportation company Bowen Land and Sea Taxi is operating the service, which will cost $2 for full fare ($40 monthly) and $1 concession ($20 monthly). Children under five travel free. Tickets can be purchased on board using cash, or in advance from city hall, Queensborough and Centennial Community Centres, as well as three River Market vendors.
